Antanas Baranauskas Literary Prize

2010 Paulius Vaidotas Subačius
Paulius Vaidotas Subačius

The 2010 ANTANAS BARANAUSKAS LITERARY PRIZE was awarded to

PAULIS VAIDOTAS SUBAČIS for the study "Antanas Baranauskas: The Text of Life and the Lives of Texts" (2010).

This book rejects the traditional literary history’s cherished intentions of „magically“ recreating the classic’s personality as if it were alive and presenting an exemplary overview of his work. It speaks of the poet’s life as a text whose coherence is determined by the effort of reading. Therefore, the focus is on the critique of previous readings and interpretations, and on the search for their cracks and internal contradictions. A textual perspective on the poet’s life of texts or stories, which are only initially controlled by the writer, reveals the importance of editors, publishers, and readers. The paradoxes that arise when considering the textual entirety of „Anykščiai šilelis“ are highlighted. The perspectives of intentionality, sociality, linguistic, and bibliographical code, which are important for contemporary text theory, are used, and the early publications of the poem are viewed as a unique multifaceted text in the context of the whole of Europe.

Paulius Vaidotas Subačius was born on May 4, 1968, in Vilnius – a textologist, literary scholar, historian, Doctor of Humanities, professor at Vilnius University, and academician of the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Sciences.

2011 Rimantas Povilas Vanagas
Rimantas Povilas Vanagas

The 2011 ANTANAS BARANAUSKAS LITERARY PRIZE was awarded to

RIMANTAS POVILAS VANAGAS for the documentary prose book "The Academy of Dogs" (2011).

The author of the book carefully lays out a mosaic of the past of his native village of Pesliai, adjacent to Šventoji, near the famous Anykščiai grove. He dresses the abundant quotes from authentic texts in the journalistic garb of modern concepts, thus creating a realistic, convincing picture of the past. The book contains not only images of the holy places, but also pictures of the 1863 rebels, S. Daukantas' friend, folklore collector Kazimieras Maigys (Moigis), priest Kondratas Liogė, cross-maker Petras Blažis and other prominent personalities based on authentic facts.

Rimantas P. Vanagas was born on October 10, 1948 in Pesliai village, Anykščiai district. He is a prose writer, poet, publicist, translator, local historian, and public figure.

2012 Algimantas Zurba
Algimantas Zurba

The 2012 ANTANAS BARANAUSKAS LITERARY PRIZE was awarded to

ALGIMANTS ZURBA for the novel "Krisius" (2010).

The novel is set in the final years of World War II, a confusing and horrifying post-war reality that drastically changes people's destinies. Some choose the path of struggle, while others simply try to survive.

„The novel ”Krisius“ (2011) meets Algimantas Zurba’s own criteria: prose is the heavy artillery of literature. There are a lot of weapons, shootings, wounds, and blood. Could it be otherwise if it tells about the last years of the war and the first post-war years? About the creation and reclamation of collective farms? About horses that were hunted down and taken to the slaughterhouse? About hunting – in the most diverse sense. People, deer…” – Gintarė Adomaitytė.

Algimantas Zurba was born on February 8, 1942 in Žvaguičiai village, Biržai district, and died on September 9, 2018 in Vilnius. He was a Lithuanian writer, publicist, and editor.

2014 Gintautas Dabrišius
Gintautas Dabrišius

The 2014 ANTANAS BARANAUSKAS LITERARY PRIZE is awarded to GINTAUTS DABRIŠIS for the poetry books "Joju vienas" (2011) and "Upė Jekaterinai" (2014).

The book „Joju vienas“ proclaims the joy of the fullness of being and the ability to accept the world as it is. He is able to look at the world as if anew, as if for the first time – both naively and unsentimentally. The work of this „nature lover“ returns to simple and joyful things, without simplifying them. His poetry must be read as it is written – with a naive and open heart, childishly trusting and honestly, the way the paintings of the primitivists are painted. „Gintautas Dabrišius truly lives within himself and for himself, and, it would seem, no common denominators of creative psychology are valid for such a poet“ – Valdemaras Kukulas.

„"River for Ekaterina" is another very Dabrišius-esque collection of poems by Gintautas Dabrišius, in which a smiling author looks out from every page, as if he doesn't care whether his poems will reach readers...

Gintautas Dabrišius was born on October 10, 1950 in Sarginė village, Prienai district – a poet.

The 2021 ANTANAS BARANAUSKAS LITERARY PRIZE is awarded to REGINA KATINAITE-LUMPICKIENE for the books of poems in the Aukštaitė Utenė dialect "Tapuolia pūkas aky" (2018) and "Varna su baltu plūksnu" (2021).

„"Dialect is inseparable from my life. When I write, I think in dialect. What I received from my dearest relatives, from the people of Juknėnai village, I have brought with me to this day. It was not difficult to carry something that is so close to me and self-evident. Yes, almost twenty years ago, when I started working with dialect, I was like a white crow, but over time, that crow was left with only white feathers, and the tribesmen gladly accepted that. At first, when creating in dialect, I adhered to archaism, it seemed to me that my old language should revolve only around its own axis" - Regina Katinaitė-Lumpickienė.

The award is given for the nurturing of dialect, linguistic authenticity, and poetic maturity – all of these values are close to the very foundation of A. Baranauskas's work, and each poem by R. Katinaitė-Lumpickienė is filled with a gentle connection with nature, local people, time, and the past.
