„The history of the nation is hidden in the "Nameless Sagas"

On September 29, Vytautas V. Landsbergis' book "Unnamed Sagas" was presented at the History Manor. This is the author's first prose book for adults, which has already won the title of Prose of the Year laureate in the "Book of the Year 2025" competition.

The event was moderated by art critics and philosophers, sisters Alma and Inga Laužonytės. The women who led the conversation shared their experiences reading the book, they raised questions, and shared insights. As the discussion developed, the book was christened the bearer of the „Partisan Myth“. Before you have time to be outraged, we hasten to explain: although a myth is considered a work of folk imagination, this epithet is appropriate here. The participants in the discussion agreed that turning important events and stories into myths is acceptable in order for the stories to remain relevant for centuries, close to us, and told from generation to generation. Want to know more?

Vytautas V. Landsbergis said that in the past, monuments in cemeteries were intentionally built of wood. A wooden monument has been around for about 80 years. That's about as long as the third generation lives – the grandchildren of the deceased, who still have a living memory of the departed Anapilin. When there are no more living memories, when there is no longer an inscription on the monument, then the soul was allowed to rest.

A spectator from the hall asked the author whether it was possible that the next generation would be a generation of „wooden monuments“ in relation to the partisans and no one would remember or appreciate the partisans’ deeds and their sacrifices. It was decided that no, if those who still remember the partisans’ exploits would turn their life stories into a myth. So it depends on each of us whether we will contribute to preserving the memory of our forest brothers – let us tell the stories of the partisans, let us read them and turn them into a myth. Let them sound loud and last a long time.
